La Jolla Tribe Artist
Earns “Best of Show” at Renowned Santa Fe Market
Jaime Okuma, a La Jolla Tribe doll maker, earned prominence at the annual Sante Fe Indian Market in August. The exhibition features American Indian artists and is the biggest and most prestigious in the nation, attracting collectors from all over the world. Okuma began working with beads as a child and made powwow dresses for herself and others. She has been making “soft sculptures” (dolls) since high school, with a high level of authenticity due to her extensive research. Her award-winning doll was of a 19th century Sioux woman carrying an intricately beaded doctor’s bag as a purse. Okuma’s mother, Sandra Okuma, is a professional oil and watercolor artist. The La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians owns and operates the beautiful 2400-acre La Jolla Campground in San Diego’s North County. In May of this year, the tribe opened a slot arcade in its La Jolla Trading Post.
