Soboba Band Sponsors “The DMoving Wall” in California
uring Park in San Jacinto was the location of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, “The Moving Wall” from April 26 – May 2. The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians was one of the major
sponsors of this rst-time event in California.
“The Moving Wall” is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and has been touring the country for almost 20 years. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power
of “The Wall.” He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington. Devitt, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers built The Moving Wall, and it went on display for the
rst time in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984.
The opening ceremony in San Jacinto took place at 10 a.m. on April 26, and
featured Robert Salgado, the Chairman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians. The Mayor of San Jacinto, Jim Ayers presented the Soboba Band with the “Key to the City” for its support and effort in helping to bring The Moving Wall to California.
