Donates $400,000 to Help TCreate New Hemet Library
he new Hemet Public Library, which opened in June 2003, cost $14.5 million, and took nearly three years to build. It has three times the oor space than the previous library and was the largest building built by the city. The library had received a
number of donations totaling more than $1 million, including a gift of $400,000 from the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians. The largest donation received, the main community room on the second oor of the new library was named “The Soboba Room,” in honor of the Tribe’s spirit of sharing. It is the single largest donation the city has received, and the largest single donation the tribe has made.

YMark your calendars for the “Battle of the Badges” scheduled for August 16 from
5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino. Presented by the Barona Band of Mission Indians and the National Latino Peace Of cers Association, the “Battle of the Badges” will feature approximately eight to ten bouts between heavyweight and lightweight law enforcement of cials. Some of the boxers already scheduled to enter the ring for charity include deputies from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Corrections Corporation of America, San Diego Police Department, Calipatria Correctional Facility, and Henderson, Nevada Police Department. In addition, opportunity drawings will be held throughout the evening
with several exciting items including a 53-inch wide-screen hdtv.
Event tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. All proceeds will bene t the Community Youth Athletic Center (cyac), a non-pro t organization dedicated to keeping youth off the streets and in school through boxing and mentoring programs. Based in National City, the cyac features a boxing gym, as well as a computer room and tutorial/mentoring center. Serving youth from 8 to 18 years of age, cyac can accommodate up to 100 kids per day. Tickets can be purchased at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino gift shop, through cyac by calling (619) 474-2922, or at the door the night of the event.
California Council on Problem Gambling Receives $50,000 for Education, Prevention and Treatment of
CA, contributed $50,000 to the California Council on Problem Gambling to fund research, education, prevention and treatment for compulsive and problem gamblers. The majority of the funds, to be donated annually, will be used for problem gambling issues in Placer County.

Barona Band of Mission Indians Celebrates 33rd Annual Powwow August 29–31
The Barona Band of Mission Indians will hold its 33rd Annual Barona Powwow on Labor Day Weekend, August 29-31 on the Barona Reservation in San Diego’s East
County. Powwows are tribal gatherings open to the public that celebrate life with dancing, drumming, games, fantastic food and
craft sales. The Barona Powwow
is free, and will be held behind
the Barona Community Center on the Barona Reservation. Powwow times are 7 p.m.-11 p.m. on
Friday and 1 p.m.-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Grand Entry times are 8 p.m. on all days. Please
note than alcohol is not permitted at powwows, and please ask for permission before you take photos of tribal members in their regalia. Call
