Golden Acorn Casino Wins California’s ‘WRAP’ Award
Golden Acorn Casino & Travel Center in Campo is a “wrap Award Winner” recognized by the state of California. e Waste Reduction Awards Program (wrap) is an annual recognition
award from the California Integrated Waste Management Board to honor California businesses making outstanding e orts to reduce waste.
Golden Acorn, named as a 2003 winner, is the only casino to make the list. “One of our biggest missions is to create an exciting and innovative entertainment venue while incorporating the natural beauty and resources of the East County of San Diego,” said Richard Slack, general manager at Golden Acorn.“Our team constantly seeks new ways to reduce waste and minimize garbage sent to local land lls, and the

Golden Acorn Casino provided the selection panel detailed information on the casino’s steps to reduce waste in daily business operations, including recycling and reuse programs. Started in 1993, the wrap Awards seek California’s best and brightest companies that take corporate initiatives to live up to the motto of “reduce, reuse and recycle.”
Gaming Courses To Be Offered at WSouthern California Colleges
ant to work in the growing gaming industry? Southern California local colleges are responding to the need for trained casino personnel as California job gures show sustained growth only in the Indian gaming business. California tribal
government employment grew 17.8 percent in the scal year that ended in July, more than any other private or public sector of the economy, according to the California Employment Development Department.
In San Diego County, Grossmont Community College in El Cajon plans to o er a certi cate of achievement that will emphasize the culture, history and theory of Indian gaming. O cials at the two-year college have plans for the program to evolve into an associate of arts program, with units transferable to four-year colleges.
San Diego State University (sdsu) also announced that its College of Extended Studies is planning to o er a Professional Certi cate in Casino Gaming program beginning April 1st.
e curriculum is designed for either those entering the casino business, or those furthering their careers in the gaming industry. Participants will obtain a strong basic background in Native American gaming history, regulations, gaming law, supervision, customer service and leadership. Industry experts will deliver instruction, emphasizing the latest developments, practices and issues facing the gaming profession, which can be applied immediately to the job. Content and competencies are geared directly toward the casino organization’s needs, and are designed to provide students with the tools necessary to become successful in this eld. Twopreviewclasseswillbeo eredthisspring:IntroductiontoIndianGaming,andGaming Regulations on Sovereign Soil. e entire certi cate program will follow in the summer and fall. Highlights of the program include courses on gaming security and surveillance, table games, slot analysis, revenue analysis, and deterring and deterring and detecting casino cheats. Casino employees receive a 15 percent discount. Employees can work full-time and still get the training to be successful in the San Diego casino industry.
In the Central Valley town of Lemoore, West Hills Community College recently won state approval to o er casino management training for jobs at the nearby Palace Indian Gaming Center, operated by the Tachi Yokut Tribe. And the Palm Desert- based College of the Desert plans to o er a curriculum for an associate’s degree program in casino management, in about a year. Courses will include Introduction to Casino Management, Casino Resort Hospitality, Casino Gaming Rules and Regulations, Player Development (promoting and advertising the casino industry), Security and Surveillance, Management of Casino Revenues and an Internship.
