Barona Valley Ranch Hosts Battle of the Badges III in Support of Community Youth Athletic Center
The Barona Band of Mission Indians, the Community Youth Athletic Center (CYAC), and the National Latino Peace O cers Association are holding the third annual “Battle of the Badges” charity boxing event
on Saturday, June 18 2005, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino.
Last year, the sold-out event raised $45,000 for the CYAC, and the non-pro t organization hopes to exceed that amount this year. All proceeds will bene t CYAC’s youth programs, which focus on keeping kids o  the streets and in school through boxing, educational and mentoring programs.
“We are extremely proud to continue our support of the Community Youth Athletic Center by hosting the Battle of the Badges charity boxing event for the third year in a row at Barona Valley Ranch,” said Rhonda
Welch-Scalco, Chairwoman of the Barona Band
of Mission Indians. “Last year over 2,000 people
attended the event and we hope even more people are ringside this year as we raise money for such a worthwhile organization.”
Organizers plan on the event consisting of 12 exciting bouts.  e boxers are police o cers from the San Diego Police Department, Donovan State Prison, the San Diego Sheri  ’s Department, National City Police Department, Chula Vista Police Department, California Corrections O cers and Imperial County law enforcement. Los Angeles County law enforcement o cers are also scheduled to participate in this year’s boxing competition.
“ e interest in the Battle of the Badges boxing event has certainly grown over the years and we’re so pleased that the Barona Band of Mission Indians support our event so enthusiastically,” said Victor Nunez, a member of the Board of Directors of CYAC.  e Battle of the Badges is a primary funding source for CYAC and it’s vital
to the success of our various programs.  e support we receive from the Barona Band of Mission Indians has been a key ingredient to the ongoing accomplishments of our organization.”
Over the past  ve years, the Barona Band of Mission Indians and the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino have contributed over $215,000 to CYAC.  at includes a $170,000 donation that was made to help the organization purchase a new 3,700 square-foot facility in National City that opened its doors in 2001.
 e Community Youth Athletic Center (CYAC) is a non-pro t organization dedicated to keeping youth of the streets and in school through boxing and mentoring
programs. Based in National City, the CYAC features a boxing gym, computer facilities and a tutorial/mentoring center. Serving youth from eight to 18 years of age, the CYAC can accommodate up to 100 kids per day at their facility.
Event tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children, 14 and under. In addition, VIP tables are also available at $300 for a table of four. Tickets can be purchased at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino gift shop, through CYAC by calling
