Casino Revenue From San Diego Tribes Pays For Six New Fire Engines
In mid-October the leaders of the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Barona Band of Mission Indians, and Sycuan Band of the
Kumeyaay Nation joined at the Viejas Reservation near San Diego to dedicate six new re engines to ve San Diego County re departments.
The engines for the Alpine, East County, Lakeside, Rural and San Miguel fire districts were purchased with $1.7 million of casino revenues that the three San Diego tribes pay into a statewide fund, the Special Distribution Fund.
A portion of the fund is returned to local counties each year, and a committee of tribal, county and local officials decided to spend half of 2004’s $4 million allocation on regional fire fighting equipment.
“ These engines are crucial tools in protecting the residents of our area,” said Barona Tribal Chairwoman Rhonda Welch-Scalco. “As we come up on the anniversary of the Cedar fire, we hope that we never again have to face the devastation that we had in that natural disaster.”
The announcement was made at a Viejas sports park that served as the main San Diego East County staging camp for crews battling the 2003 wildfires.
San Diego County has received about $9 million in Special Distribution Fund revenues over the past two years collected from California tribes — including Barona, Sycuan and Viejas. The money has been used to purchase two fire fighting helicopters and to fund a long list of large and small grants to public-safety agencies.
