Barona Tribal Chairwoman Rhonda Welch- Scalco was named a 2006 recipient of San Diego State University’s (SDSU) Monty
Award.  e annual Monty awards are given to SDSU alumni and faculty for exceptional achievement
and contributions to the San Diego and California community.
 e award winner for SDSU’s College of Education, Chairwoman Welch-Scalco received her master’s degree in1994inspecialeducation,andiscurrentlyworkingon
aPh.D.inearlychildhooddevelopmentattheUniversity of California, Riverside. She is a leader and advocate of higher education for tribal members and is dedicated to the support of the growth and learning of Native

TRumsey Band of Wintun Indians Donates $201,000 to Community
he Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians announced its 2006 second quarter charitable donations totaling $201,000 on May 1st.  e tribe is located in Brooks, California where they own and operate the Cache Creek Casino Resort.
“We believe that the roots of success lie in both the head and the heart,” said Marshall McKay, Rumsey Tribal Chairman. “ e organizations we are fortunate to have aligned with have been truly successful in reaching their goals and we are honored to have the opportunity to make a di erence.”
Other bene ciaries of the Rumsey Community Fund 2006 second quarter donations include the Blue Ridge-Berryessa Natural Area Conservation Partnership, Davis Bridge Educational Foundation, Davis Community Meals, First 5 Yolo County, Friends of NAACP Sacramento Branch, Knights Landing Children’s Center, Lee Middle School,  e Nonprofit Resource Center, NorCal Center on Deafness, Ronald McDonald House Charities,  e Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, Tuleyome, Winters Shakespeare Workshop, Woodland Opera House and Yolo County Veterans Coalition.
 rough the Community Fund, a philanthropic branch of its tribal government, the Rumsey tribe has given more than $8.2 million since October 2000 to local organizations supporting education, community health, arts and humanities, environment, community development and social services.
Bene ciaries of contributions during the second quarter of 2006 included Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center, Yolo Family Resource Center and Yolo County Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA).
 e Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center in
downtown Sacramento provides programs for entire families, from young children to seniors.  e programs
for youth keep kids o  the street, and help high-risk children and teens in one of Sacramento’s most troubled neighborhoods acquire the skills necessary to become responsible individuals and productive members of the community.  e Center also provides supportive services to parents of the children and youth.
 e Yolo Family Resource Center focuses on improving parenting skills by supporting families and communities through services and activities.
Yolo County CASA is a nonpro t organization that advocates for children in Yolo County. CASA volunteers  ll a crucial need by acting as a friend, a role model and as a voice for abused and neglected children.
