RWesponsible Gaming—Keep Your Play Fun
hen we created the Gaming Guide ve years ago, we established this monthly newspaper as an advocate for Responsible Gaming. Making news available about Southern California casinos and slots seemed a great boon to casino players, and judging from your frequent letters, phone calls,
and e-mails, we know the Southern California Gaming Guide provides a welcome service. Each month we remind readers that gaming is a form of entertainment and intended to be fun, and provide readers with a reminder that gambling can become a problem for some by publishing a pro bono California Council on Problem Gambling ad—usually below this message—that includes a helpline telephone number.
In support of this month’s National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, we urge you to be aware of your play. While statistics show that less than 5% of casino players nationwide have gambling problems, the problems do exist. e primary focus of the week is to promote the fact that treatment is available. See page 8 for information about National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, and also news of the recent California survey results on problem gambling. Keep your casino play fun. Bring what you can a ord to lose for your entertainment, and enjoy a full casino experience—a wonderful bu et, perhaps a show or great shopping.
Sharing is an integral part of the Native American culture. e economic prosperity that casinos have brought to Southern California Indian tribes has resulted in their giving generously in their communities. Every year Southern California gaming tribes share their wealth, giving to a wide variety of charities, including local nonpro ts, schools, universities, and in response to local and national needs. See page 25 for just a few highlights of 2006 Southern California Indian tribe’s philanthropy in their communities.
Tax time draws near, so don’t miss Jean Scott, The Frugal Gambler’s column this month on Tax Record- Keeping for Gamblers. Her column informs casino players of IRS document-keeping practices in the event of a tax audit. See page 22 for ways to keep a good gambling record.
New casinos, casino expansions in Southern California—read Gaming News each month (on page 8 in this issue) to keep up to date with what’s going on in Southern California casinos.
Daylight Savings Time begins on March 11th, and Spring actually begins on March 21st. Meanwhile, take your four-leaf clover to the casino on March 17th and who knows? You may just have “ e luck of the Irish” and make your casino visit very special with a big win. Check out page 8 for St. Patrick’s Day special events at Southern California casinos, including great giveaways, slot tournaments, and fantastic fun food.
Keep your e-mails, voicemails and letters coming. We try to answer them promptly—and will answer each one. Remember to wager wisely, and keep your play fun at the casinos.
