Bill Burton: About Gambling
love to watch people when I go to the casino. Sometimes the things you see people do are quite The Talker
entertaining; however, there are other times when a casino player’s behavior is just bad. is player wants to chat as you play. He wants to know
Iconsidermyselfafairlyeasy-goingguyanddomybesttogetalongwitheveryone.Butonethingthatbothers where you are from, how long you are staying, and
me is rude and inconsiderate people who seem oblivious to how their behavior a ects anyone around them. Like people who talk during a movie and then ignore the angry stares or pleas to be silent from surrounding patrons. I have noticed some behavior at the casino which can be just as annoying to surrounding players. Maybe you have encountered a few of these players as well.
many other personal questions that you may not want to answer. Ignoring her or grunting short answers in hopes that she will take a hint to leave you alone, may prompt the opposite response. She may then launch into a monologue telling her life story or all about her latest winning or losing streak. Pretending not to understand the language she is speaking does not deter her, so you might have to resort to ear plugs.
Group Players
Group players can be really rude and annoying. One person actually plays the machine while the others cheer her on. e group is loud and noisy and they jump up and down and scream at the smallest win. is would be fun, but in a crowded area they tend to bump into your chair as you try to enjoy your own game. Sometimes
“friends” of players will sit in the seats of the machines on either side of the player even though they are not playing. Sooner or later one or two of the group will become bored and force the player to take the entourage to look for other excitement.
Continued on page 26...
The Machine Banger
e machine banger pounds or slaps the spin button of a slot machine with such force that it vibrates the machine. Other players can usually hear the “slapping” sound three rows away. It’s almost as if they think the spin button is activated by force and the more they slap, the more the credits the machine will pay. If they are playing an older machine that still has a handle, they can really make some noise. ey will yank the handle down with enough force to lift them out of their seat and then let it snap back into place. You can only hope that total fatigue will force this player to go away.
The Machine Beater
e machine beater is similar to the machine banger only they play with much more anger. Instead of using an open hand they will beat the spin button with a clenched
st. A losing spin is likely to provoke an occasional kick to the base of the machine or a slap to the front display panel of the machine. is may be accompanied by enough profanity to make a sailor blush.
The Lounger
e lounger uses the shelf in between the machines as a personal foot rest. e player will lean back in his seat and prop his dirty shoe up on the ledge. Any drink glasses or ash trays that may have been on the edge are likely to topple over which, of course, will be ignored. After a few hours of play, the player is likely to fully extend his leg and place it on the seat of the adjacent machine. If asked nicely, the player may move his leg, usually accompanied by a grunt, sigh or other expression of inconvenience. With any luck, the request may force him to seek a more comfortable location to spread out.
