runner straight and runner-runner ush draw gives the 56♥ a 10.4% chance. So, getting 9:1, the 56♥ can call,
but the queens can’t.
Now that you know that runner-runner possibilities—
especially with coordinated cards—can a ect the game, keep your eyes open. Make a bigger bet on the turn if the second in a suit comes out. Be very careful with slow- playing hands that you are going to be tied to like sets and straights. And if you checked it all the way down to the river and you runner-runnered the nut straight but a runner-runner ush is also possible, have the foresight to see that if someone shoves a stack of chips in your face, that you can lay it down. If you can runner-runner, why can’t they?

Have you been nding ways to keep yourself interested while not in a hand? Like the op is AK5 and there is a bet and a call and then the turn and river are 6 and 4 respectively, and you think to yourself, wouldn’t it be awesome if I could have 78 and still be in the hand?
Well, you can be. If your 78 was suited and two of your suited cards were on the op, with position and to
black. Anytime you have a backdoor ush draw, you have a 3.5% to make the ush. at’s almost like having one extra out when there are two cards to come (which is about 4.4%).
Combine runner-runner ush draws with even a runner-runner straight draw and you see where you can get yourself in trouble. Imagine you have a set of 7s on a board of 37Q with one club. If you give a free card to a
guy holding AK club, there are 10 clubs which give him a ush draw and a couple of them (and 6-7 other cards), also give him an open-ended straight draw. He’s only 4.3% to win now, but if a ten of clubs falls on the turn, he is now 22.7% to hit the nut straight or ush on the river.
So back to our pop quiz. An opponent has black aces, and the op is 2K8 with one heart. If he happened to shove in for the rest of his money and showed you his hand and you were getting 9:1 to call, can you call with QQ or 56♥? As you may have deduced, the answer is surprising. e queens are 8.38% chance to hit a set and
overtake the aces. But the combination of the runner-
a reasonable bet and call,

black, you are (assuming
that your ush is good
and there is not a di erent
 ush draw out there), you
are picking up another 6
outs to the stone cold nuts.
And in some ways, the 4
or 9 are better than the
heart, because it’s possible
that someone has a bigger
 ush and it’s less obvious
that you made your hand.
How is a guy who was cautiously playing A6 going to think a 4 helped you?
It’s not that suited cards are the Holy Grail of poker, but when you consider calling a raise with suited connectors or playing a marginal hand, having cards that are suited can push a hand from the red into the
