Keep Your Casino Play Fun
Volume 7, Number 3 • March 2008
When we created the Southern California Gaming Guide six years ago, we established this monthly newspaper as an advocate for Responsible Gaming. Making news available about Southern California casinos and exciting slots each month seemed a great service to casino players, and judging from your
letters, calls, and e-mails, we know the Gaming Guide delivers what you want to read. Every month we also remind readers that gaming is an entertainment and intended to be fun. is month read Bill Burton’s About Gambling column on page 6 for his take on keeping casino play fun.
Each month for six years we have continued to provide readers with a reminder that gambling can be a problem for some by publishing a pro bono California Council on Problem Gambling ad—below—that includes a help line phone number. In recognition of this month’s National Problem Gambling Awareness Week from March 9th–16th, we urge you to be particularly aware of your play. While statistics show that 2 to 3% of casino players nationwide have gambling problems, the problems do exist. at’s 6 million to 9 million Americans, yet only a small fraction seek out services, such as treatment and self-help recovery programs. e primary focus of the awareness week is to educate the general public and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness about the help that is available both locally and nationally.
Here are a few tips for keeping your play at the casino fun:
• Gamble socially with family or friends—not alone.
• Limit gambling by predetermining how much to gamble and for how long.
• Never gamble more than you can a ord and never borrow money to gamble. • Don’t gamble when under stress or when feeling lonely, angry or depressed. • Drink alcohol responsibly when gambling.
Keep your casino play fun. Enjoy a full casino experience—a wonderful meal, perhaps a show or great shopping—and who knows, you may even end up a winner.
And speaking of winners, this issue features Jackpot Winners—those lucky players who won signi cant jackpots at Southern California casinos during the last six months. It’s fun to see the smiling and sometimes stunned faces of the winners, and you can see just a few of them starting on page 18, and read some of their stories.
Take your four-leaf clover to the casino on March 17th and who knows? You may just have “the luck of the Irish” and make your casino visit very special with a big win. Don’t miss all of the “green” promotions this month.
And in another meaning of “green,” read how the Barona Band of Mission Indians has created and sustained award-winning environmental programs on page 28.
As always, keep your play fun, and wager wisely at the casinos.
