CRhairman of Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians Receives National Award
obert Salgado, Chairman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, received the Wendell Chino Humanitarian Award on April 22 during the National Indian Gaming Association conference in San Diego.  e nonpro t trade association gives the award annually in honor of Wendell Chino, a Mescalero Apache Indian who served as chairman of
his New Mexico tribe for 43 years.
Chairman Salgado, 65, was honored for his decades of leadership to his tribe whose lands
are located in the San Jacinto Valley in Southern California.  e Soboba Band owns and operates Soboba Casino. During his acceptance speech, Chairman Salgado appealed to other tribal leaders to provide education for young people who will be future leaders and teachers.
 e award ceremony also featured a  lm about Salgado’s life with tributes from his sister,
Rose Salgado; U.S. Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif.; U.S. Rep. Mary Bono, R-Calif.; Soboba Band Vice Chair Rosemary Murillo; and Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians Chairman Mark
Macarro, among others.

VLocal Schools Benefit from Viejas Concerts in the Park
iejas Entertainment and Production, owners and operators of  e Alpine Union School District has one kindergarten facility, three elementary
San Diego’s premiere concert venues, have partnered with the Alpine Union School District to help support music education in its elementary and middle schools by donating proceeds from each
Concerts in the Park ticket sold.
In its ninth season, Viejas Concerts in the Park recently announced its 2008 concert season lineup, with 22 concert dates through October, and more to come (see Casino Entertainment Guide on page 20).  e intimate venue located at the Viejas Outlet Center can accommodate up to 2,500 ticket holders per show.

One dollar from each concert ticket sold will be directed to speci c music programs in Alpine elementary and middle schools.  e donation is expected to range from $60,000 to $90,000 and will go toward much-needed resources such as instruments, lighting, software and advanced programs at the local schools.
