Celebrating the Green
Volume 8, Number 3 • March 2009
What better month than March to celebrate the green. It’s St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, for those of you who like the lucky leprechaun spirit, and it’s the beginning of spring on March 20th. And there is green, as in the winning ways of energy and resource conservation. Southern California casinos are
very aware of resource conservation and, as you can read in Gone Green on page 27, have ongoing green programs that have been recognized and awarded. And then, there is the green that makes the world go round—$$$, moolah, Benjamins, cash, simoleons, loot—the obvious inspiration for us all to go to the casino. is month’s cover feature on page 18 is all about Getting the Green: More Ways to Win at the Casino.
As writer, Maya Winkler notes in Getting the Green, 2009 may be one of the best years for Southern California casino players, with casino values and o ers not seen before—some of them listed in her article. And the best o ers are for players club members, so if you are not a players club card holder at your favorite casino, make sure you sign up soon. Otherwise, you will miss out on some fantastic ways to win this month and the rest of the year at the casino.
Meanwhile, take your four-leaf clover to the casino on March 17th, if you believe in “ e Luck of the Irish,” and perhaps you will make your casino visit very special with a big win. Check out writer, Gail Anders’ article, 5 Ways to Change Your Luck, on page 22. According to her experience, casino players don’t need lucky charms. But do read on and see if you agree with her winning ways.
In recognition of this month’s National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, March 1st to March 7th, we remind you to be aware of your casino play. e vast majority of casino players nationwide go to casinos for entertainment, hoping that they will win, of course. While statistics show that less than 3% nationwide of casino players have gambling problems, the problems do exist. e primary focus of National Problem Gambling
Awareness Week is to promote the fact that treatment is available. See page 16, Keep Your Play Fun, about National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, and note that every month we feature a California Council on Problem Gambling pro bono advertisement directly below this editorial to give readers information about help for problem gambling. When casino play ceases being fun, it’s time to stop and seek help. e California Council on Problem Gaming has resources available for problem gamblers.
Keep sending your e-mails, letters and calls. We try to answer them promptly, and answer each and every one. We particularly enjoy hearing what you would like to read about in your favorite (so you say) gaming newspaper/
magazine.
As always, keep your play fun, and wager wisely at the casinos.
