It’s 2013, the thirteenth year of the twenty- rst century, and, if you’re like a lot of superstitious believers, it may not be the luckiest year. But there’s a new breed of casino player who believes just the opposite. And they are not in the minority.
Brian R. of Oceanside, says 13 is nothing to be feared. “It’s my lucky number. Has been and always will be,” says the long-time casino player. He believes 2013 is going to be his luckiest year yet. “ is just may be my year to win e Big One,” he a rmed. Luck comes (and goes) for all casino players, many who increasingly share Brian’s
feelings about 13.
But fear of the number 13 has a speci cally recognized
phobia, triskaidekaphobia, a word coined in 1911. J. Paul Getty and Franklin Delano Roosevelt su ered from triskaidekaphobia. Napoleon was also plagued by a dread of 13. Christopher Columbus, too, seems to have been a icted. e superstitious su erers of triskaidekaphobia try to avoid bad luck by keeping away from anything numbered or labeled thirteen. Based on this phobia, airlines typically do not have a 13th row, and most tall buildings do not have a 13th oor.
ere are a number of theories behind the cause of the association between thirteen and bad luck. ey range from 13 turns on a hangman’s noose to thirteen people
at e Last Supper. And what’s the story behind Friday the 13th? On Friday, October 13, 1307, Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar and seizure of all of their assets based on accusations of heresy. Most were tortured and burned at the stake. is is commonly believed to serve as the origin for the observance of Friday the 13th as an unlucky day.
And then there’s lucky 13. Several successful sports gures have worn the number 13. Football great, Dan Marino, known for passing the 3rd most yards in NFL history, wore the number 13. Wilt Chamberlain wore 13 on his jersey throughout his NBA career. And then there are those contrarian casino players who have found great luck on the
13th day of the month — particularly on Friday the 13th. Southern California casinos are helping to make 2013 a very lucky year for players with some fantastic promotions and events that start right at the beginning
