Lunar New Year is celebrated all over the world, particularly in Asia, in countries with large Chinese populations including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan,
ailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. e Chinese calendar is lunisolar which signi es both
the moon phase and the time of the
solar year. So Chinese New Year is
often called the Lunar New Year.
e source of Lunar New Year isn’t exactly known, but it has gained
importance through the centuries. Traditionally, the Lunar New Year is a time to honor ancestors. e night
before Lunar New Year, family and
friends gather over a special dinner
that includes foods that are meant
to enhance wealth, happiness
and luck: noodles, sh, tangerines
and sweets. Tradition also calls for
a thorough cleaning of the house and
personal matters to clear out any bad luck and make room for good fortune. People often exchange red paper envelopes, Hong Bao, that contain cash in speci c lucky numbers in multiples of 8s or 9s.
e 2014–15 Lunar New Year is the Year of the Wood Horse, and begins on January 31st, with the new moon. If you were born in 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, or 2002, you were born under the Horse sign. Reader opinions may vary of course, but some horse-like traits
indicatethatyoucanbehardworking, lovetheoutdoors and be very independent. is year of the Horse could be a time of quick victories (a jackpot in your future?), unexpected adventure, and sudden romance. And if you’ve wanted to travel, this year is a great one, and the more remote and unusual the destination the better. Don’t hesitate on your choices, as swift action can bring
success. Overall in Chinese astrology, the Horse is thought to be a fortunate year that brings luck and great things. What
will it bring you?
