SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GAMING GUIDE
FEBRUARY 2020
We’re celebrating 18 years’ publishing the Southern California Gaming GuideTM this month. Since February 2002, we’ve delivered casino and slot news to Southern California casino players and reported on over $2 billion worth of jackpots and thousands of winners. If you’re new to the
Southern California Gaming GuideTM, here’s our brief history.
In 2001, there was an information void about events at Southern California casinos. You could have
seen or heard a tv or radio commercial, or tried dialing up on your modem to find news on the Internet, but not until February 2002, when the first issue of the Gaming GuideTM was published, did anyone have any idea of the incredible amenities and fantastic play that awaited Southern California casino guests. Two years prior, in March 2000, California voters had passed Proposition 1a that amended the California Constitution to allow casino-style gaming on Native American lands, and within that short time, Southern California had 15 operating casinos.
First published as The San Diego Gaming GuideTM, it included San Diego County casino listings; slot, poker, and bingo news; players club promotions, big winners, and lots more. Eight issues later, in August 2002, due to overwhelming reader and advertiser requests, The San Diego Gaming Guide was expanded to include all Southern California Native American casinos, and renamed the Southern California Gaming GuideTM. Since then, it is Southern California’s only casino player publication, with an estimated monthly readership of over half a million people in 2019.
Much has changed in the Southern California casino world since 2002, when there were 15 casinos and only 4 were casino resorts. Now in 2020, there are 24 casinos and 14 are casino resorts.
Thank you for making the Southern California Gaming Guide your go-to casino guide. Of course, we are grateful, indeed, for all our advertisers throughout the years. Some have even been with us all 18 years! They enable us to keep the Southern California Gaming Guide free to you, our appreciated readers. Take a
look at past issues, arranged by year, online at TheGamingGuide.com in easy-to-read flipbooks. Meanwhile, always keep your casino experience entertaining. Keep your play fun, and wager wisely at
the casinos.
