Is the Media Looking for the ‘Dark Side’ of
a Good Story?
Inever envisioned I would use my editorial space to get on a soap box so soon. But as a pub- lisher and editor, I feel it’s my responsibility to say what I believe. And the time is right, so here I go. California’s Indian Gaming is good news for the State’s economy and a boon to
America’s indigenous people. I have been reading in the national press and most soberly, in our local San Diego newspaper, about Indian gaming concerns. A surprisingly factless, but in ammatory editorial on May 1st, strongly asked if California Indian gaming had “Potential for Crime.” (That was the exact title of the editorial.) Let’s put this piece in context since it was published, along with the tempest it stirred.
video poker entertainment. We’re also happy to introduce San Diego gaming readers to nationally- known video poker expert, Bob Dancer. Dancer’s feature on page 15 gives readers an introduction to video poker by comparison to the poker card game. We plan to feature Bob Dancer as a regular colum- nist in The San Diego Gaming Guide, so get ready to become savvy video poker players! Dancer is an author of video poker strategy cards and software and an upcoming book on the subject. Look for his column right here each month!
Next month, we will tell you all about the 21st century high-tech casino. Did you know that a San Diego County casino is one of the nation’s trend- setters in technical innovation? Also, next month marks our sixth issue—how time ies when we are having fun, and the debut of The Southern California Gaming Guide. The SoCal Gaming Guide will cover news and features about casinos in the Inland Empire and will be distributed throughout Southern California at every (well, almost) 7-Eleven, Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, Sav-on, Blockbuster Video, and hotels, convenience stores and bottle shops in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Remember, The San Diego Gaming Guide’s news and features are read in over 120,000 copies per month and distributed extensively in San Diego and Orange Counties. Meanwhile, Happy Father’s Day! And have fun at the casinos!

Newspapers have a dif cult mandate. They have to report facts—the truth—as they nd it with an unwav- ering lack of bias at all costs. Any compromise for any purpose—increasing circulation revenues, furthering a vested cause—cannot be tolerated in the Fourth Estate. But the editorial pages have a very different purpose. This is where opinion can be printed, not bound by a fact- checker’s stroke or legal scrutiny. But editorial pages also have a different responsibility. This is the place where an editor, or editorial team can look at an issue, revolve it, examine all sides and offer intelligent observation, hopefully engaging readers to create a forum of discus- sion. The editorial’s pronouncement was not only lled with untruths, but in amed unwarranted concern for a burgeoning San Diego gaming industry that has made and can make signi cant economic advancements for
indigenous tribes, and for all of the San Diego County community. I do not suggest that any news media orga- nization should suppress evidence of wrong-doing to protect any economic interests. My point is that before the newspaper says “The sky is falling,” they should look up. Is the media looking for the ‘dark side’ of a good story? I was pleased to see a rebuttal of the editorial, a letter to the editor, written by California’s State Attorney General, setting the facts straight. After all, his of ce was maligned, as well as the integrity of our local gaming tribes’ commissions. Let’s demand our local media tell the truth about California tribal gaming and not try to ignite a non-existent ame of fear.
