TBarona Plans Charter School
he Barona Band of Mission Indians is planning to convert their current school into a local charter school. The Barona Indian School currently includes seven classrooms, a com-
puter lab and a library. It is located a mile from Barona Casino, adjacent to the Barona Museum, Tribal community building and day-care center. Many of the students live at Barona or are children of casino employees. The current 33-student Barona School is a satellite of a charter school in Redding. Organizers of the new school project hope to have more local community involvement in the school.
Pauma Tribe Celebrates 1st Anniversary of
Casino Pauma
On Sunday, May 19th, the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians celebrated the rst anniversary of its casino opening with an outdoor event for tribal members and their families and friends in the Casino Pauma parking lot. Tribal Chairman, Chris Devers said the casino is integral in paving the way for the future of the tribe, for realizing economic independence for tribal members and their descen- dants. Part of the celebration included playing the Indian Hand Game Peon. Nestled in a citrus grove, in the heart of Pauma Valley, Casino Pauma features 24-hour gaming and dining, and live entertainment.
