The Basics on Low-Roller Comps by Jean Scott
This month, we offer an excerpt from Jean Scott’s newest book, More Frugal Gambling.
You may wonder: Can we go into a casino where we have no history of play, where we reserved our room directly from a reservations clerk, and get any comps the rst time we stay there? The answer is an emphatic yes, you can.
You don’t have to be a big bettor, a high roller, to get comps. However, comps don’t come automatically just because you start playing a machine or sit down at one of the table games. You almost always have to make some effort to get them, and the most important thing you have to do is see that the casino knows you’re playing. How do you do that?
First things rst. You need to get a slot (player’s) club card before you put any money in a slot machine, so the casino puts you in its system and tracks your play, in order to award you with comps. So many people play slot and video poker machines-quarters, dollars, and even higher-without a card that I want to go up and shake them and tell them how many comps they’re missing. Actually, I sometimes wish I could slip my player’s card in their machine and collect all those free bene ts they’re wasting!
Since the more you play, the higher the level of comps you will earn, it’s best to concentrate your play at rst at one casino where you want to get comps, rather than
playing a little at many casinos and not getting even to a minimal comp level at any. However, it’s a good idea, especially in Las Vegas, to join as many slot clubs as you can. This gets your name and address in casino databases and can often produce a few discount mail offers, maybe even for free rooms during slow periods during the year.
However, if your time is limited, don’t choose this method if it keeps you from establishing a core casino where you play enough to regularly get free food, free rooms, and even some higher-level comps, such as invitations to parties. The best time to work on picking up comps in other casinos is after you have one you can depend on to be your base of operations.
Once you’re in the system of a core casino and have some play on your card, there’s no better technique for getting comps than by asking for them. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get with a small amount of play if you just ask. Be sure to remember to ask nicely, not in a demanding tone.
Jean Scott, the “Queen of Comps,” is the author of the best- selling book The Frugal Gambler, a casino guide for thrifty low rollers, plus the sequel, More Frugal Gambling, available in November at www.FrugalGambler.biz. Featured on “Dateline NBC,” “48 Hours,” and The Travel Channel, she stresses sensible, responsible gambling and shows how to stretch out casino fun time whatever your gambling bankroll.
