Bill Burton: About Gambling
IBe a Good Neighbor Player
n his poem “Mending Wall” Robert Frost wrote that “Good fences make good neighbors.” In the era he wrote, he meant that good neighbors respected one another’s property. Good farmers, for example, maintain their fences in order to keep their livestock from wandering
at a time. Even during crowded times they play two machines, not allowing others the opportunity to play. Some casinos have a sign stating “One machine per player during busy times,” but these players won’t give up one machine even when you ask them.
The Peeping Tom
is is the person that stands right behind you and watches as you play. is is very distracting. On a rare occasion, someone watching over your shoulder may be looking to see how much you have won, hoping to follow you when you cash out. When I encounter someone hovering behind me I usually ask them nicely to move back. If someone doesn’t move and makes you nervous, you can always call Casino Security by pressing the change light and telling the slot attendant.
Enjoy Yourself
I’m not suggesting that you have to become a total hermit when you play. But when you visit the casino you want to have fun and not deal with annoying neighbors who you wish you could just fence out.
Until next time, remember: “Luck comes and goes... Knowledge Stays Forever.”

onto neighboring farms.
Today we can look at a di erent meaning. If we have a “good fence” it can be used to block out neighbors who may be unruly or know we are protected from intrusion in our own little sanctuary.
Many times in the last year or so I wished that I could have a fence around some of my neighbor players when I visited the casino. It seems that there has been a sharp decline in the etiquette of many casino players.
is could be because there are so many new players visiting casinos who are not sure about casino etiquette. Or that some players get caught up in their own excitement and behave in a totally di erent way then usual. Here are a few examples of the types of neighbor players I would like to fence out at the casino. Maybe you have run into them as well?
The Noisy Neighbor
Many occasions I have been seated beside a player who has two or three friends who watch and play along with them. One person actually plays the machine
while the others cheer them on. e group is loud and noisy and they jump up and down and scream at the smallest win. is is not necessarily bad, but it can be distracting and annoying if they are really boisterous and bump into you in their enthusiasm.
The Nosey Neighbor
e nosey neighbor wants to talk to you as you play. He wants to know where you are from, where you are staying, and many other personal questions that you may not want to answer. Or she may want to tell you her life story or her latest winning or losing streak. I’m not an unfriendly person, but many times I play slots rather than table games because I want to enjoy some solitude. Answering personal questions from strangers is not what I want to do when I play.
The Selfish Neighbor
ere is nothing more aggravating than going to a busy casino and not being able to nd a slot machine to play because some players play several machines
