ATnnual Problem Gambling Awareness Week
he National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) presents the  fth annual Problem Gambling Awareness Week campaign, a grass roots public awareness and outreach campaign from March 5th–11th.  e goal of the campaign is to educate the general public and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem
gambling and raise awareness about the help that is available both locally and nationally.  e NCPG is the national advocate for programs and services to assist problem gamblers and their families. NCPG research  nds that 2%-3% of the U.S. population will have a gambling problem in any given year.  at’s 6 million to 9 million Americans—
yet only a small fraction seek out services, such as treatment and self-help recovery programs.
the preferred place to gamble. And, card rooms and internet gaming account for the greatest personal losses.  e multi-lingual telephone survey was conducted
between 2005 and 2006 and included California residents aged 18 and over.  e study is available online at http://www.problemgambling.ca.gov.
Over the past three years, OPG imple- mented a number of prevention pro-
grams including public awareness campaigns, two gambling help lines,
and community and government organization training on recogniz- ing problem gambling and available resources. For help with problem

California Indian casinos contribute annually to the Special Distribution Fund,
which is used partially for appropriations to the OPG. Totaled contributions to the fund for 2005 by Indian casinos were more than $140 million.
